Government borrowing hit a record high in September, with the biggest deficit for the month since records began in 1993.

ONS figures show £16.2bn was borrowed last month, casting doubts on the government's plans to reduce the deficit, the Guardian reports. Meanwhile, Total borrowing for the first six months of the financial year was £73.5bn, compared to £77.4bn at this stage last year.
