Ros Altmann, director-general of Saga, has slammed Bank of England deputy governor Charlie Bean after he encouraged people to spend their savings to boost the economy.
Bean told Channel 4 News last night: "In the short term we want to see households not saving more, but spending more". "I think it needs to be said that savers should not necessarily expect to be able to live just off their income in times when interest rates are low. It may make sense for them to eat into their capital a bit." Altmann has attacked this stance as ‘short-sighted', ‘dangerous' and at odds with the Coalition's pledge to reinvigorate pensions.
