French pension row rages on in second day of strikes

Trade unions in France began their second 24-hour strike last night in protest against President Sarkozy's plan to raise the retirement age from 60 to 62.

Police estimated over a million people took industrial action on 7 September against the pension reform, and a high turnout is expected today, Reuters reports. Schools and other public services are being disrupted, whilst up to half of flights have been cancelled in the capital and other city airports. Despite the chaos, the French government says it will not move on the issue. "We haven't changed. We are very firm on the core of the reform, which is age," says Labour Minister Eric Woerth.
