FTSE responds after Wall Street's 3% surge

The FTSE opened more than 1% higher on Thursday after Wall Street rallied the most in six weeks to edge back above the 10,000 point barrier.

Minutes into trading, London's leading index was up 52 points, or 1.04%, to 5,065. Lloyds Banking Group, up 4.6% to 61p, and Royal Bank of Scotland, up 3.4% to 44p, are among the early winners. Both are on the EU's list of 91 banks that will be subject to in-depth "stress-testing". In the second straight day of gains for US stocks, the Dow finished 274.66 points higher, or 2.8%, to 10,018.28 - while the broader Standard & Poor's 500 and tech-heavy Nasdaq both surged 3.1%.
