Tory MP John Redwood has advised the Government it will plug the massive gap in the public coffers quicker if CGT is set at a rate people view as a "bargain".
The chairman of the Economic Competitiveness Policy Group, who has been a vocal opponent of the Government's initial CGT proposals, is advising the Cabinet on "revenue maximising" taxation. He said today at think tank the Policy Exchange he has been pushing a policy of low rate CGT. This will generate more income to pay off Britain's debts than a higher rate which will have the opposite effect as more people increase their use of tax avoidance schemes.
