Financials drive Dow but jobless numbers disappoint

US stocks pushed ahead, buoyed by financials, despite a hike in jobless figures.

The Dow Jones has added 34.69 points (0.37%) to 9315.36 this morning, in spite of more Americans than anticipated filing unemployment claims, indicating companies remain focused on cutting costs as the economy struggles to emerge from the recession. Applications fell more than forecast by 4,000 to 570,000 in the week ended 29 August, according to Labor Department figures. The total number of people collecting unemployment insurance climbed. Bank of America Corp has gained 3.2% to $16.79, while JP Morgan Chase & Co has added 1.71% to $41.56. Aluminium producer Alcoa topped the clim...
