Miners surge but FTSE flat

The FTSE has opened flat despite a rally from miners and natural resources companies.

London's blue chip index is up 0.35 points (0.01%) to 4817.90, buoyed by the performance of metal miners, as gold, silver, platinum and copper futures held steady. Gold extractor, Randgold Resources, is among the winners in early trading, up 7.51% to £39.66, while silver miner, Fresnillo, has added 5.64% to 637p. Platinum miner, Lonmin, has gained 3.89% to £14.14, while Vedanta Resources and Kazakhmys have risen 3.8% to £16.93 and 3.42% to 951.5p respectively.
