Many ill-informed British citizens who have moved outside the UK are getting a surprise tax bill from HMRC as well as their new home.
This is according to PKF Accountants and business advisers which has seen an increase in people looking to move abroad permanently to escape UK tax hikes. However, it warns many who relocate may have to pay UK taxes as well as triggering a liability in their new country. Matt Coward, director of private client tax services at PFK, says it is all too common for people to move abroad only to find out later they have not left the country as far as UK tax rules are concerned.
