Sir Allen Stanford arrested in the US - papers

The billionaire and cricket entrepreneur Allen Stanford was arrested in Virginia overnight and is expected to appear in a US court this morning to face criminal charges, The Times reports.

Mr Stanford's lawyer, Dick DeGuerin, said that the Texan had surrendered to FBI agents parked outside his girlfriend's house in Fredericksburg, about 50 miles south of Washington, after a warrant was issued for his arrest late yesterday evening. Mr DeGuerin told Reuters that Mr Stanford had walked out of the house and asked if the FBI agents had a warrant. He told them to arrest him if they did and that he planned to return to Houston today to turn himself in if they didn't. "He's in FBI custody," Mr DeGuerin said.
