SPECIALIST equity release provider, Sovereign Reversions, has predicted an increasing dependence on the value of homes as a way of bridging the pension gap.

It forecasts that by 2036, there will be 20.8 million people over the age of 60, comprising almost one third (29pc) of the population, compared with just one fifth (21pc) today. And, given the rising age dependency ratio, the increase in the retirement age, the abolition of final salary schemes and the underestimated longevity by the pensions industry, many of those planning for retirement would appear to be facing financial difficulty.
