Analysts differ on US economy

ANALYSTS have given mixed messages about the state of the US economy and whether the nation's equities are poised for fresh highs or further lows.

Cormac Weldon, head of US equities at Threadneedle Investments, said that despite much of the negative newsflow about the US economy, there are good reasons why the market can make further progress. He explained that this is because the US has a flexible and mobile workforce and the labour displaced by a downturn in residential home building should still be able to be accommodated in other related areas of the economy, such as commercial construction, where Weldon feels there is plenty of capacity.
