Emerging markets 'will be third of world economy'

EMERGING markets are set to account for more than a third of the world's market capitalisation by 2017, fund houses have agreed.

Speaking at a roundtable organised by Lyxor Asset Management, companies such as Baring Asset Management and Rathbones stated that emerging markets would treble their market capitalisation in the next decade and produce higher returns. Percival Stanion, head of asset allocation at Baring, said the weighting of emerging markets including Hong Kong and Singapore in the MSCI All Country World Index would rise from its current level of 11pc to more than 30pc. “The path is well mapped out for emerging markets, and with it will come a series of changes to the world economy,” he said. “The growt...
