Blackrock predicts low US rates

SIGNS of economic weakness and lower inflation levels will prompt the US Federal Reserve to start lowering interest rates, according to Bob Doll, BlackRock chief investment officer for equities.

Doll said economic and inflation data released in the US showed the economy remains relatively robust and inflation remains “well behaved”. He also said some 2006 inflation data showed the core Consumer Price Index was 2.6pc, a relatively low number, but still beyond the Fed’s comfort level. “This backdrop has prompted many to wonder if and when the Fed might begin enacting interest rate cuts,” he said. “Our belief is that signs of economic weakness will persist and that inflation levels will be somewhat lower in the months ahead. “Should both of these happen, we would expect the Fed to...
