Amvescap boosts FTSE

The FTSE 100 Index added 0.29% to 6,104.30 points today, led by fund manager Amvescap.

Amvescap gained 8.71% to 624p as the fund manager reported a healthy increase in first quarter pre-tax profit to $171.7m versus $110.8m a year earlier. Legal & General added 0.53% to 142.25p after it reported its sales rose 27% in the first three months of 2006, boosted by strong growth in the UK. Sales rose to £390m compared with forecasts of about £340m. The news took Friends Provident up 2.30% to 199.75p, while Old Mutual added 2.71% to 199p, Aviva rose 1.18% to 812.50p and Royal & Sun Alliance gained 1.45% to 139.50p.
