In London, markets began to rise as the UK Government gave guarantees to Northern Rock's savings customers and the FTSE 100 was up 40.4 points, or 0.66%, to 6,223.2.
Alliance & Leicester recovered some of the ground lost over the past few days, up 155.5 points, or 25.92%, to 755.5p, and Northern Rock recovered 30.5 points, or 10.79%, to 313.25p. HBOS shares added 34.5 points, or 4.24%, to 847.5p, Barclays jumped 22 points, or 3.79%, to 603p, while RBS gained 11.5 points, or 2.26%, to 520p. Lonmin made the biggest losses, down 132 points, or 4.01%, to £31.57, followed by Kingfisher, which lost 5.4 points, or 2.91%, to 180p, and DSG dropped 1.5 points, or 1.11%, to 133.9p. On Wall Street, markets closed slightly down and the Dow Jones fell 39.1 point...
