Tories start conference under a cloud - papers 4 October

The annual Conservative Party conference kicks off under a cloud of doubt following another drubbing in a local by-election last week and concerns the party is still without an effective leader.

The FT says a chief concern of the party’s bosses is the slipping support from business leaders, who are looking for a way to cut red tape. The challenge is to ensure businesses don’t believe Peter will be Paid to rob Paul, that is, business taxes may be cut, but other taxes such as NI will be raised to meet spending proposals on healthcare, education and so on. The Daily Telegraph says firm pledges to cut taxes and limit immigration would see the party to victory, according to poll results. ”[The poll] will provide reassurance…despite coming fourth after the UK Independence Party...
