Annuity buyers wary of turbulent economy

Many of those approaching retirement are putting off buying an annuity while they wait for an end to current stock market volatility, experts say.

A discussion at Prudential's annuities round table also revealed many in the industry support the FSA taking action against insurers who fail to take on the Association of British Insurer's (ABI) 'Options' initiative. The panel of annuity providers and advisers suggested new thinking was needed when it came to retirement income planning so consumers can become more involved in actively managing their pension and retirement options.
