Weak US banks hit FTSE

In London, markets fell in early trading; mirroring losses in Asia and the US, and the FTSE 100 was down 54.6 points, or 0.86%, to 6,283.3.

Vodafone shares made the biggest gains after a strong profit announcement, up 5.6 points, or 3.08%, to 187.6p, while Cable and Wireless shares gained 4.3 points, or 2.39%, to 184.3p. Unilever gained 38 points, or 2.24%, to £17.35, WPP Group added 8 points, or 1.37%, to 594p, while BSkyB climbed 7 points, or 1.16%, to 613p. Lonmin shares fell 134 points, or 4.25%, to £30.21, Anglo American dropped 128 points, or 3.84%, to £32.01, and ICAP lost 23 points, or 3.71%, to 597.5p.
