Tories to cut 'Labour spending spree' - papers 16th February

THE CONSERVATIVES yesterday pointed a finger at the government's current spending spree and said it would campaign to freeze most Whitehall budgets, except health, education and pensions.

The Daily Telegraph reports shadow chancellor Oliver Letwin said spending needs to be brought under control to avoid further tax rises if Labour won a third term. Chancellor Gordon Brown responded to the attack by saying the "Tories' mask had slipped" showing them to be more right-wing than at any time for a generation.The cuts they are planning in public services are also "more extreme" than those carried out during the 80s when Margaret Thatcher was in power, he said.
