The FTSE rose 42.5 points, or 0.73%, to 5879.8p this afternoon following rumours of a Carphone Warhouse bid from US electronics business Best Buy.

The mobile phone retailer rose 24.5 points, or 8.06%, to 328.5p. BG Group rose 55 points, or 5.26%, to 1100p. Friends Provident fell 16.4 points, or 10.57%, to 138.8p following news of a £440m and plans to axe 600 jobs. Old Mutual fell 7.4 points, or 5.62%, to 124.3p The Dow Jones rose 1.46 points, or 0.01%, to 12444.29c this afternoon as consumer-focused businesses led gains. Home Depot rose 0.86 points, or 2.93%, to 30.24c while Wal Mart rose 1.18 points, or 2.4%, to 50.34c and American Express rose 0.91 points, or 1.92%, to 48.25c.
