In conjunction with World AIDS Day, the Association of British Insurers has produced a guide for gay men which aims to explode the myths surrounding the way insurance companies deal with issues of sexuality.
Over the previous decade, many gay men applying for life insurance felt they were treated unfairly because of the practice of asking about sexuality on application forms for life insurance, critical illness cover and income protection insurance. The ABI ended this practice in October 2005 when it issued a statement of best practice on HIV and insurance, and the guide produced today summarises the current practice. For example, it explains the new HIV risk questions ask about people’s personal behaviour and that GPs will not notify insurers of negative HIV tests which have been taken. ...
