The FTSE fell 0.72%, or 46.5 points, to 6386p this afternoon as Northern Rock continued its slide after Virgin Money's advertising agency resigned, in what The Telegraph reports as a blow to Richard Branson's bid for the bank.

Northern Rock fell 7.37%, or 8.7 points, to 109.3p. The Telegraph says the agency quit as Virgin would become direct competition for its other client, Lloyds, if its bid succeeds. Tesco rose 1.83%, or 8.75 points, to 487.75p after it declared a price war on its rival US supermarkets. The Dow Jones rose 0.07%, or 8.86 points, to 13380.58c. Honeywell International rose 1.78%, or 1.01 points, to 57.63c after it launched products to help protect sensitive documents from counterfeiting.
