Reits news takes FTSE over 6,000 again

The FTSE 100 Index gained 19.7 points, or 0.3%, to 6,011 points today, led by the property sector after Gordon Brown confirmed plans to introduce real estate investment trusts (Reits).

Land Securities was the top gainer, rising 12.59%, or 232p, to 2,075p. British Land jumped 12.31%, or 143p, to 1,305p, Hammerson gained 9.08%, or 108p, to 1,298p and Liberty International rose 8.68%, or 99p, to 1,239p. Meanwhile, Prudential fell 2.83% to 720.50p and HSBC Holdings dropped 2.33% to 965p after their stock traded ex-dividend. In the US, the Dow Jones Industrial Average has gained 31.85 points, or 0.3%, to 11,267.32 points as investors grow confident again earnings will climb fast enough to outweigh increasing interest rates.
