The FTSE took heart from a strong start on Wall Street to close the week up 106.80 or 1.74% at 6262.10.
Mining stocks and house builders contributed to the rise with Rio Tinto the top performing stock up 390.00 or 7.92% to 5313.00 on bid speculation. Taylor Wimpey was the next highest performer up 14.20 or 7.80% to 196.20. At the other end of the table, energy company Centrica had the greatest fall down 7.75 or 2.18% to 347.75. Royal Dutch Shell also failed to gain ground. At the start of a half day’s trading in the US, the Dow opened higher up 86 to 12,885 and the S&P 500 rose 12 to 1,429.
