Northern Rock propels FTSE upward

Developments in the future of Northern Rock have seen the bank fly to the top of the FTSE charts, propelling the index up 24.1 points, or 0.38%, to 6286.2 at 10.07am.

The bank has climbed a whopping 30.6p, or 35.62%, to 116.5p, in early trading. It is followed by Antofagasta and Vedanta Resources, who have both made moderate gains on Monday. Mitchells & But is currently the day’s biggest loser, dropping 21 points, or 3.28%, to 620p, while Vodafone and Alliance & Leicester also drop.
