Tesco earnings push FTSE upwards

In London, shares made gains after successful results were announced by Tesco, putting the FTSE 100 up 71.1 points (1.22%) to 5,902.7.

Astrazeneca added 134 points (6.76%) to £21.15 after a legal decision to protect its biggest selling drug, while Tesco added 26.25p (6.71%) to 417.25p. Carphone Warehouse’s reports of mixed trading hit shares, which fell 41.25 points (15.48%) to 225.25p, while Home Retail shares fell 9p (3.61%) to 240.25p. On Wall Street, markets opened high before falling slightly in mid-morning trading and the Dow Jones was up 34.84 points (0.28%) to 12,336.9. Alcoa shares saw the biggest rise, up 1.09 (3.21%) to $35.02, while Pfizer shares gained 0.32 (1.56%) to $20.80. General Motors shares fell 0.2...
