FTSE fails to rebound following early fall

London markets closed the week in sharp decline as early losses were cemented by a weak Wall Street opening, the index finished 91.70 points lower (1.56%) to 5787.60.

FirstGroup plunged as smaller rival Go-Ahead Group lost nearly 20%, First was down 6.27% to 605.50. Schroders got smacked on another poor day for financials, with its non-voting stock dropping 4.28% to 839; while Standard Chartered also lost ground, 4.13 lower to 1531. The UBS upgrade led Vedanta to the best performance, up 3.39% to 2072 – while compatriot Kazakhmys followed, 2.32% higher to 1365. In New York, fears of more write-down pain for financials has hit the sector in morning trading, with the Dow Jones IA currently 0.41% lower to 12326.02. Retailers are also headed in the w...
