Three-quarters see IHT as unfair

The vast majority of consumers believe inheritance tax is unfair according to a new report from Friends Provident.

The provider says 75% of people surveyed believed the tax to be unfair compared with only 8% who believe the tax to be reasonable. Moreover, 75% also want to pass on their estate intact to their children or other family members with around 10% estimating the total value of their estate to be between £300,001 and £500,000 putting their estate firmly into IHT territory. And almost a quarter (22%) of those questioned estimate their estate could be worth between £100,001 and £300,000 putting those at the upper end in danger of crossing the £285,000 threshold.
