Rise in pension age is 'inevitable' - papers 1st February

A RISE IN the pension age is "inevitable" by 2020, John Hutton, the Work and Pensions Secretary, said last night in a dramatic intervention that highlights the looming cash crisis, reports The Scotsman .

According to the paper, his remarks in a Commons debate on the future of pensions signalled the government is seriously considering bringing forward by a decade the retirement reforms proposed by the Turner Commission. But the statement risked angering Gordon Brown, the Chancellor, who believes he should have the final say over any pensions proposals. The Chancellor was known to have concerns about the Turner report's proposals to raise the state retirement age to pay for a restoration of the link between earnings and pensions.
