Age Concern England has criticised the Government's decision to set the retirement age at 65 and called plans to allow employers to sack older people over that age threshold as ‘a cowardly u-turn'.
Speaking on the Government's proposals, Gordon Lishman, director general of Age Concern England said: “Its refusal to move with the times is a missed opportunity. In an ageing society the economy needs the skills of older workers. Yet thousands will continue to be denied the right to choose when to retire, just because of their date of birth.” Lishman said the Government's so-called efforts to outlaw ageism could only be described as a mockery and would lead to the unravelling of the incoming age discrimination law.
