The safety of the UK banking system is now ranked below Botswana and Senegal due to the deepening financial crisis, according to a World Economic Forum (WEF) report.
The report found Canada’s banking system to be the safest in the world, followed by Sweden and Luxembourg. The UK has fallen to 44th place in the WEF’s table of banking safety, with a score of 6, compared with Canada’s 6.8. The highest possible score is 7, indicating a healthy system with sound balance sheets. The US also saw the safety of its banks fall considerably and currently sits in 40th place, while Germany ranks 39th.
