FTSE falls as miners retreat

The FTSE 100 has ended the day slightly down with a fall of 5.3 points, or 0.09%, to 6,198.6, as utility and mining stocks retreated.

Miner Antofagasta was the biggest drag on the index with a fall of 2.21% to 508p, closely followed by United Utilities which slipped 2.2% to 778.5p, while Centrica dropped 1.92% to 345.5p. Lonmin also slipped 1.61% to £29.88, while Next dropped 1.43% to £17.89, although losses were limited by Man Group which was up 1.28% to 515.5p, while SABMiller gained 1.68% to £11.53. BT Group posted the biggest gains with a rise of 3.69% to 316.5p, closely followed by Shire which added 2.27% to £10.80, while Rolls-Royce Group climbed 2% to end the session at 446p.
