A proposed merger between British Airways and Iberia helped the airline soar almost to the summit of the FTSE100 this afternoon.
The firm climbed 14p, or 5.97%, to 248.5p at the close of trading on Tuesday, helping the blue-chip index climb 6.6 points, or 0.12%, to 5,319.2. Compass Group leads the winner’s table, advancing 21.75p to 364p, and Wolseley and Marks & Spencer Group also had positive afternoons. HBOS, Barclays and BG Group all struggled, with the Halifax firm slumping 14.75p, or 5.13%, to 272.75. In the US, strong mornings for GEN Motors and Bank of America have helped propel the Dow Jones forward 163.49 points, or 1.47%, to 11,294.57.
