The FTSE reached 6470.2p this afternoon after rising 13.5 points, or 0.21%.

Northern Rock fell 19.9 points, or 10.24%, to 174.4p, as news reports show the lender has failed to attract a buyer. Carphone Warehouse Group fell 31.75 points, or 8.55%, to 339.5p. Taylor Wimpey fell 17.5 points, or 6.08%, to 270.25p. Wolseley fell 41 points, or 4.83%, to 807.5p. Barratt Developments fell 36.5 points, or 4.64%, to 749.5p. Antofagasta rose 47.5 points, or 6.01%, to 838p. BHP Billiton rose 98 points, or 5.92%, to 1754p. Vedanta Resources rose 92 points, or 4.31%, to 2227p.
