Slow Xmas sales cause FTSE fall

In London, markets declined drastically over worries that consumer spending may not be picking up in the run up to Christmas, and the FTSE 100 dropped 119.2 points (1.86%) to 6,277.8.

Imperial Tobacco Group saw the biggest gains, up 42 points (1.63%) to £26.19, while BAE Systems shares jumped 7 points (1.54%) to 462p. Rexam saw the biggest losses, down 27 points (6.37%) to 397p, after Citigroup cut its recommendation from buy to hold. Home retail shares also suffered, falling 19 points (5.76%) to 311p due to weakening sales trends. On Wall Street, markets fell as investors continued to worry about a possible recession in 2008 and the Dow Jones dropped 63.4 points (0.48%) to 13,276.45 in early trading.
