NU makes record critical illness payout in 2007

Norwich Union (NU) paid over £106m for critical illness claims in 2007, which is its largest sum for any one year to date.

The sum was made for 1,387 cases with an average per claim of £77,000. NU reported 84.7% of total critical illness claims were met in 2007, 4.98% claims are still pending while 6.15% were declined for criteria not met and 4.17% for non-disclosure. The average policy term at claim was 5.5 years and the average age for claimants was 42 for women and 43 for men. Top three claims by illness type were cancer 63.6%, heart attack 10.9% and multiple sclerosis 5.8%.
