FTSE recovers on busy Thursday

The FTSE was recovering slowly but surely on a busy morning following a disappointing Wednesday and has climbed up 38p, or 0.61%, to 6308.8.

Rio Tinto was leading the improvement, jumping 154 points, or 4.37%, to £36.79. It was closely followed by BG Group, up 30p, or 3.81%, to 816.5p and Lonmin, up 97p, or 3.01%, to £33.24. However, early gains were stemmed by losses for DRAX ORD, down 30.5p, or 4.52%, to 645p, Royal Bank of Scotland, down 10.5 points, or 1.85%, to 556.5p, and Standard Chartered, down 17p, or 1.12%, to £15. In the US, the Dow Jones dropped 143.39 points, or 1.07%, to 13305.47 at the close of play. GEN Motors dropped 0.85 points, or 2.66%, to 31.07.
