Merrill dilemma smacks stocks

A poor start on Wall Street smashed the prospects of a positive day for the FTSE 100, with the index closing 32 points lower, or 0.49%, to 6482.

Miners struggled all day after Kazakhmys announced its copper cathode output dipped 5% in Q3. It led the day’s falls, dropping 107 points, or 7.21%, to 1378; while fellow miner Lonmin dipped 159 points, or 4.66% to 3250. Reckitt Benckiser was lower despite the household products group rasing its full year revenue targets, it finished down 140 points, or 4.88%, to 2728. BAE Systems climbed after Lonrho announced it will add three BAE 146 aircraft to its fleet. The defence giant closed 16.5 points ahead, or 3.36%, to 507.
