In London, shares moved ahead in early trading despite losses in the mining sector, and the FTSE 100 was up 46 points (0.82%) to 5,675.1.
Cadbury Schweppes shares surged as the firm announced it would demerge its North American soft drinks arm, Dr Pepper Snapple, on 7 May, up 21.5 points (3.99%) to 561p. Lonmin shares added 96 points (2.94%) to £33.65. Xstrata shares dropped 120 points (3.13%) to £37.14 after it was revealed a rival firm was no longer pursuing the company, while Wolseley dropped 9.5 points (1.64%) to 570p. On Wall Street, markets closed down as concerns over the state of the US economy persisted, with the Dow Jones down 153.54 points (1.29%) to 11,740.15.
