SFO opens Madoff UK investigation

The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) is to investigate Bernard Madoff's UK business operations.

The veteran US investor, currently facing trial for a $50bn fraud, may have also committed fraud through his UK operations and the SFO wants City professionals to help with its investigation. Following a report from Grant Thornton, which was appointed provisional liquidators of Madoff's UK businesses, the SFO has decided to open an investigation. SFO director, Richard Alderman, says: "This is a good example of the SFO's new, faster, approach to tackling fraud. The public say they want us to take early action and this is what we are doing."
