More training needed for pension trustees

Larger pension schemes, particularly those with defined benefits, have better governance than smaller schemes with less access to trustee training.

In its first governance survey of 1,235 schemes, the Pensions Regulator found 42% of schemes have provided trustees with advanced training, while 41% of schemes have provided no training at all. Within this figure, 55% of schemes which provided no training were defined contribution (DC) schemes, and of these 71% had between 12 and 99 members, and of the 45% of DB schemes which failed to offer training 51% had less than 100 members. In addition, the Pensions Regulator has found a “significant minority” of schemes had shortcomings in important areas of good governance, with 70% of DB schem...
