In London, the FTSE 100 ended the day down by 38.6 points, or 0.58%, to 6,659.1 after analysts said inflation had fallen slower than expected.
Tate & Lyle shares lgained 28 points, or 4.9%, to 600p but other gains were far more modest. Royal Dutch Shell A added 12 points, or 0.59%, to £20.52 and Lloyds TSB shares gained 3 points, or 0.53%, 572p. Barclays shares were up by 3.5 points, or 0.48%, to 732p and Royal Dutch Shell B added 10 points, or 0.48%, to £21. Lonmin lost 152 points, or 3.81%, to £38.33, Schroders lost 48 points, or 3.61%, to £12.80, and Schroders NV lost 40 points, or 3.39%, to £11.39.
