FTSE level following Tullow Oil discovery

In London, stock markets saw a turbulent start to the day, with several peaks and troughs reached, with the FTSE 100 down 1.6 points (0.03%) to 6,213.9.

Tullow Oil shares made major gains after it announced it had discovered a significant column of light oil off the coast of Ghana, up 124 points (16.32%) to 884p. TUI Travel shares climbed 8.75 (3.63%) to 249.75p. Smith & Nephew shares dropped 23 points (4.06%) to 544p, while London Stock Exchange Group lost 43 points (3.91%) to £10.57. On Wall Street, markets fell after a number of disappointing developments in takeover offers and the Dow Jones dropped 88.66 points (0.68%) to 12,969.54.
