Almost nine in ten IFAs say abolishing compulsory annuitisation and Inheritance Tax (IHT) might go some way to restoring consumer faith in UK pensions, according to a poll.
Steve Bee, head of pensions strategy at Scottish Life, says: “Our voluntary pension system in the UK ought to be the envy of Europe and we should refuse to go along with this modern idea that there is something wrong with people being able to control their own lifetime savings.” One unnamed IFA polled says: “In the context of increasing life expectancies the present system mitigates against pension saving as the end result is any money unspent before death will most likely end up in the hands of an insurance company or HMRC.
