Bank of England governor Mervyn King has warned chancellor Gordon Brown he needs to keep on top of borrowing in the medium term.

the FT reports the warning comes after another Tory Party attack on the government deficit, and ahead of latest figures on public spending published set for publication today. "For 20 years or more the G7, while lecturing each other and the rest of the world on the need for fiscal discipline, has continued to borrow more and more," King says. The governor also warned economists from reading too much into Christmas sales figures.
