Energy stocks give FTSE a boost

The FTSE 100 has bounced back from a slow start this morning to end the day with gains of 146 points or 2.64% to 5,678.7, with mining and energy stocks leading the rally as copper prices rose and oil traded at over $70 a barrel.

Kazakhmys topped the leaders with gains of 124.5p, or 13%, to 1,082.5p, closely followed by Cairn Energy which gained 10.29% to 2,187p and Xstrata which added 10.09% to 1,942p. Other leading stocks included Antofagasta which ended higher with a jump of 9.69% to 2,072p, while Anglos American completed the top five risers with an increase of 9.19% to finish the day at 2,080p. Elsewhere Marks & Spencers headed the list of losing stocks falling 3.17% to 549p, while Imperial Tobacco slipped into second place with a drop of 1.1% to 1,620p.
