In London, stocks gained in early trading after oil companies announced good results and the FTSE 100 was up 34.2 points (0.56%) to 6,124.6.
BP shares climbed 26.5p (4.58%) to 605p after first quarter profits increased 63%. Royal Dutch Shell made major gains for both share classes after profits rose 25%. B class shares added 87 points (4.52%) to £20.10, while A class gained 81 points (4.17%) to £20.22. Rio Tinto shares fell by 142p (2.28%) to £60.84, while fellow mining firm Eurasian dropped 26 points (2.02%) to £12.63. On Wall Street, shares fell as investors became cautious over a possible interest rate cut later this week and the Dow Jones dropped 20.11 points (0.16%) to 12,871.75.
