FTSE falls as retailers flag

The FTSE fell 0.04%, or 2.8 points, to 6413.9p this morning as retailers dragged.

B&Q owner Kingfisher fell 5.86%, or 8.6 points, to 138.1p while Argos owner Home Retail fell 5.78%, or 18.5 points, to 301.75p. Next fell 4.62%, or 77 points, to 1589p after reporting a 3.2% fall in like-for-like sales to Christmas Eve. Alliance & Leicester rose 4.91%, or 37 points, to 791p following reports Santander may buy the bank. On Wall Street, markets dropped considerably as news emerged that high oil prices had hit manufacturing. The Dow Jones fell 1.67%, or 220.86 points, to 13,043.96c. Pharmaceutical company Pfizer achieved the only gains on the exchange yesterday, up 0....
