Utilities limit FTSE losses

The FTSE 100 has ended the day down 17.9 points, or 0.29%, to 6,122.1 as utilities offset earlier losses.

Scottish & Southern Energy posted the biggest gains with a rise of 1.96% to £15.11, closely followed by Kelda Group which gained 1.86% to 933p, while Slough Estates climbed 1.44% to 740p. British Airways gained 1.44% to 493.75, closely followed by Severn Trent which added 1.38% to £14.71, although gains were limited by Prudential which dropped 1.86% to 660p. Amvescap was the biggest drag with a fall of 3.55% to 557.5p, closely followed by ICI which dropped 3.33% to 420.5p, while Kingfisher slipped 2.63% to 249.75p, and Experian fell 2.04% to 600.5p.
