Bulk annuity strategies may be too 'aggressive'

The increased interest in the bulk annuity market is causing concern among some parts of the industry.

Speaking at the Punter Southall panel discussion ‘The Nature of the Pensions Promise’, Mick McAteer, consumer advocate and former principal policy adviser at Which?, says he is concerned companies entering the bulk annuity market could pursue investment strategies which are too ‘aggressive’. He adds he doesn’t want to “tar everyone with the same brush” as some of the offerings in the market could probably work very well for schemes but he says he is very nervous of the whole issue of an insurer taking over pension scheme liabilities.
